Alberta artist Alex Janvier unveils his public art commission for Rogers Place and it looks pretty spectacular

Acclaimed aboriginal artist Alex Janvier unveiled a miniature version of the mosaic that will be installed in Edmonton’s new Rogers place arena. The piece of art is set to cost about $700 000 and is the largest public art work yet commissioned by the city.

The circular mosaic will sit in the floor of the Rogers Place Winter Garden entrance which will run along 104th avenue. Janvier says the piece is inspired by the sun, the sky, hills and rivers.

All the money is coming from the city’s agreement with developers that brings in 1% of the cost of construction projects in the city to public art.

We’ve seen them all – that weird out of place baseball bat, the shiny balls and those huge feet over at South Gate.

The work is one of four set for the Rogers Place arena and if this one is any inclination to the next few, we should all be excited.
