An ultra-low cost airline from Iceland is set to begin cheap flights between two of Canada’s biggest travel hubs and Europe beginning next spring.

WOW Air, based in Reykjavik, Iceland, will begin flying four times a week between Toronto and the Icelandic capital, as well as from Montreal to the city for as little as $99 one way — “offering travellers the cheapest connection between Europe and Canada,” a statement from the airline said.

  • The Iceland airline’s network includes 17 European cities, including London, Paris, Berlin and Barcelona. The airline made open its first transatlantic routes last spring, connecting Reykjavik to Boston and Washington D.C.

“They have gone way beyond our best expectations. So with that potentially proving the model, we decided to expedite our North American plans. Toronto and Montreal are great next steps,” the airline’s CEO, Skúli Mogensen, said in an interview.

The airline will begin service to and from Montreal on May 12 using a fleet of Airbus A321 aircraft. Service to Toronto will commence on May 20.

“WOW Air will be a very interesting option for our passengers, who will enjoy very attractive fares for flights to Iceland and Europe,” said James Cherry, chief executive of Aeroports de Montreal, the airport authority for Montreal-Trudeau International Airport.

Service will be year-round, the airline said, with departures scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The Icelandic airline said it has the lowest airfares of any European ultra-low cost carrier to destinations like Copenhagen, Paris and London — “including luggage.”

A complete list of where WOW Air flies to, which includes some North American locations such as Boston and Washington D.C., can be found on the airline’s website.

The announcement comes as Canadian carriers step up efforts to offer cheaper service to Europe. WestJet said last month it will start offering flights to London for between $199 and $299 from six airports across the country.
