My book recommendation this month is “Tough Times Never Last- But Tough People  Do “by Dr. Robert Schuller.

How appropriate is this book especially for what is going on with the downturn of the oil industry in Alberta and our economy. Well there is hope Alberta. Back in the eighties when I first read this book, Alberta as the rest of Canada were suffering economically back then as was I.  I had a mortgage at the time of 21% , (yes that is right 21%) my wife was not working and I was working two jobs to make ends meet. Yet look at the rates today. Look how Alberta has flourished over the years. Who would have ever thought that rates would go as low as they are today and yes Alberta is back to where it once was in the eighties.

My point and that of the book is; tough times don’t last and by thinking and acting in a positive way you can turn things around or gain the strength to hang in there and make good things happen. Dr. Schuller offers tips on just how to get things turned around in your life when there seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

“Hang in there” Justin Trudeau said that to one of the individuals that was a part of the CBC special when he met with ten Canadians.  I know it seemed to some as a lame comment to make to the individual who was out of a job and wanted some reassurance he would get help. Well as Robert Schuller says when one door closes another one will open. You just have to be open and willing to do whatever it takes to make things better and not rely on the government or others to make things better for you.

I recall that I took on a job to sell advertisements for hotel magazines in Toronto just to make an income.  I had left a secure  full time teaching job to pursue a financial dream.  I left my family at home and worked out of town doing an unfamiliar job of which by the way I despised. It is said that for every adversity there is a seed of equal or greater opportunity.  Keep that in mind! I made it through that time and the rest is history.

I am not saying everyone will be saved by reading this book, but what I will say is that is that it can only help to get your perspective in order and provide some hope.

Where there is no hope there is no reason for moving forward. Always keep the faith so they say and keep hope flickering in the distance no matter how dark it might seem in different aspects of your life.

Tough times never last but tough people do.  Get Tough!!!!
