The Edmonton Police and Red Cross have issued a warning about Red Cross Scammers. They aren’t actual Red Cross workers.

The Red Cross HAS NOT sent anyone out who is officially affiliated with the organization. They aren’t doing, or planning on doing, any door to door donation collecting.

Police say there have been instances of people unaffiliated with the Red Cross going door-to-door in neighborhoods in west Edmonton.

“Certified Red Cross canvassers have identification and they never ask for cash donations. They ask for credit card information to set up a monthly donation, and carry a tablet or iPad.

They introduce themselves by name and make it clear they are speaking on behalf of the Red Cross.

Only those who have previously donated to the Red Cross would ever receive a phone call from them.” Sawn Feely, Spokesperson for Canadian Red Cross (In conversation with the CBC)

This is a warning the Red Cross has released in the past:

“The Canadian Red Cross is urging the public to be on the lookout for individuals who are approaching people on the street asking for donations on behalf of the society.

While Red Cross fundraisers knock on doors all across Canada and street fundraisers work on the streets of several cities across the country, the society is not actively conducting street or door-to-door fundraising campaigns in the province.

Red Cross fundraisers wear a prominently displayed name tag and have good knowledge about the Canadian Red Cross programs. Fundraisers often wear a vest, a coat or a golf shirt identified with the Red Cross logo and will also carry material on our programs. In some parts of the country, canvassers carry iPads to collect information electronically.

People are encouraged to call the local police or the Red Cross if they are approached for donations by someone claiming to be from the Red Cross.”

IF YOU SEE OR EXPERIENCE ANY SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOR PLEASE CONTACT THE POLICE
