If you’re like us, you usually tap and knock your watermelons to feel for hollowness. Sometimes it works! And you take home a sweet and refreshing melon. But then there’s the times when you you spend a solid ten minutes by the giant cardboard box full of watermelons, tapping and touching, thinking you’ve found the perfect one, only to cut into a tasteless grainy mess.

APPARENTLY there’s a better way to pick the best melon.

Shape, weight, color and quake,” says Michael Marks of the Mercury News.

STEP 1. The shape! Look for a SYMMETRICAL melon.

STEP 2. Weight! Lift the melon, it should feel heavier than it looks.

STEP 3. Color! Look at the underside of the melon where it was sitting. This area should be yellow with a ring of black crystallized sugar around the stem. (This is a sign of sugar/sweetness!)

STEP 4. Vibration! THIS is when you get to do the good old knock on the watermelon part. Don’t listen/feel for hollowness though, rather, feel for those good vibrations ;)

If the melon meets the steps, then you have yourself a winner!

Happy Thursday!!
