Jason Wheeler is a Fort Mac resident who was evacuated and affected by the wildfires.

Things are looking up for him though, he recently won the lotto! $1 million!

And the best part, Jason says he’ll be donating some of his winnings to the charities that helped him and the rest of his family back in May when the wildfires changed their lives.

“We were evacuated from our house during the Fort McMurray forest fires,” Jason Wheeler said in a news release.

“We got a lot of help from the Canadian Red Cross, food banks and the SPCA. I want to return the favor.”

Jason was out camping when he won the lottery.

“I checked the lottery website when I was sitting around the fire and saw there was a million dollar winner in Alberta, I thought, ‘How nice would that be?’ “

Then the next day, Jason got his ticket scanned.

“I had a few tickets to scan, when I got to the big winner, I had to put it through the scanner a couple times.”

Talk about paying it forward!

Congrats Jason!
