The city of Montreal has passed passed it’s contentious pit bull ban.

As of Oct 3rd, there will now be a ban on new ownership of pit bull and pit bull-type dogs. The list to define these dogs appears as such:

  • Staffordshire bull terriers.
  • American pit bull terriers.
  • American Staffordshire terriers.
  • Any mix with these breeds.
  • Any dog that presents characteristics of one of those breeds.

This decision comes 3 months after a vicious pit bull attack took the life of a Montreal woman.

Of course there are two sides to this story/decision.

Many say this decision gives human lives priority over dogs –

“A Montreal woman died because someone didn’t have control of their dog.”

Said Anie Samson (city executive committee member in charge of the animal file) to the CBC.

“We are extremely disappointed with the council’s decision to adopt archaic bylaws that are proven to be ineffective.”

Ewa Demianowicz, campaign manager for Humane Society International/Canada.
