City of Edmonton Councillors and Mayor Don Iveson are trying to get the closure date of  the 127th Street access to Henday changed.

As it stands, November 12th is when the road will be permanently closed.

Transportation Minister Brian Mason has said that the city ALWAYS knew this change was coming. (The road has often been home to congestion, accidents, and has been deemed dangerous.)

Don Iveson on the other hand says this was news to him and the rest of the city.

“We always understood that it was their intention to close it but we also always understood it was the intention to replace it with an interchange and we don’t have a line of sight on replacing it with an interchange yet.”

“So what council will ask for next week …is a reprieve while we look at this further and make sure that the unintended consequence of closing it isn’t further unnecessary gridlock.”

Iveson is hoping to keep the 127th road open until the 135th Street SW exchange is built.

As for now, the city says drivers will have to start using 111th street ramps and Rabbit Hill Road.
