The Edmonton Police Service has released the numbers from this year pertaining to Edmonton’s distracted driving law, and things honestly aren’t looking good.

To put it bluntly, EPS chief Rod Knecht said: “At a busy intersection in the morning I’ll tell you I can write probably four tickets on my way in to work.”

Knecht also said,“The big issue, certainly that is causing the accidents and the problems and the challenges that we’re seeing out there, is the texting.”

At this point in 2016, 3,763 distracted driving tickets have been handed out by EPS patrol units, which is 71% higher than their projected target.

Along side those numbers, the Traffic Services Division has issued 1,822 distracted driving tickets so far in 2016.

To put it bluntly like chief Knecht, Edmonton, WE ARE VERY DISTRACTED.

So we’ll end this blog post with a final quote from chief Knecht that we all need to take to heart;

“People are going to get hurt, people are going to get killed as a consequence of having to get that text message out or receive that text message, seems pretty ridiculous to me.”
