The alarm has been raised on a cat scam in Alberta after numerous people have been sold kittens that turned out NOT to be sphynx kittens.

As it turned out, the kittens weren’t being bread, but abused.

JoAnne Dyck from Red Deer was one of the individuals that got scammed, she had this to say in an interview with the CBC:

“He was like a little tiny kitten, no more than eight weeks old, and he was naked. Completely hairless.”

“It looked like a sphynx because he was very, very skinny and his face was really angular.”

“Regular sphynx kittens would want to be held and would want to be warm and touched, but he didn’t want anything to do with us. He probably didn’t want to be touched because his hair. It wasn’t supposed to not be there.”

Dyck paid $700 for the kitten, later to find what she thought was a purebred sphynx was growing a layer of orange hair.

After sharing her story JoAnne Dyck heard from others who had the same experience. She also talked to the SPCA but found there was little they could do to assist her.

Sadly the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told her there was nothing they could do either as the trauma had passed and the animal had seen a vet.

Now JoAnne is warning others to always travel to the breeder when you pick up a pet, instead of letting them come to you.
