This week, Nintendo announced they’ve discontinued the highly-popular and extremely hard-to-find NES Classic Edition. While sad for anyone who couldn’t find one, reports are now saying the reason behind the surprise announcement is to make way for a release of the much-requested SNES Classic Edition this year!!

Eurogamer (who correctly leaked info on the Nintendo Switch console prior to its reveal) says the SNES Classic Edition will be released just in time for the holiday season.

“Nintendo will follow up its smash hit NES microconsole with a mini version of the SNES, sources close to the company have confirmed to Eurogamer.

The SNES mini (or, to continue Nintendo’s official branding, likely the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is currently scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year. Development of the device is already under way, our sources have indicated.” -Eurogamer

Sure, video game emulators and knock off consoles have existed for years, but this would be an official reincarnation from Nintendo of a beloved console, along with some of its most popular games. While we wait for Nintendo to comment, we can only speculate on which classic games will be released with this. Super Mario World is a must. Donkey Kong Country? Starfox? Super Metroid?

Hopefully this time around, there will be more supply than last year’s release of the NES Classic.
