Forget about the million and one studies that say “2 glasses of red wine will give you all the antioxidants you need to live 50 years longer!” and “drinking a beer a day reduces the risk of getting cardiovascular diseases!”… because the internet has been lying to you.

Researchers from the Global Burden of Disease study at the University of Washington analyzed 694 alcohol-related studies conducted between 1990 and 2016. Alcohol was found to be the leading risk factor for disease and premature death in men and women between the ages of 15 and 49 worldwide in 2016, accounting for nearly one in 10 deaths.

The study even found that a small amount of alcohol consumption contributed to health loss across the globe.

The paper concludes with:

“Our results show that the safest level of drinking is none.”

Now will this study deter you from indulging in the sweet sweet nectar that is wine? Probably not. Will it be in the back of your mind while you’re doing so? Definitely. So just drink responsibly.
