Glad to know I wasn’t the only one! (Okay, so I didn’t lose millions BUT I did lose enough to notice the number count and it didn’t make sense … until now).

It was last night that both Ariana Grande and Kylie Jenner, who are the two most followed celebs on the social media platform, lost millions of their followers.

Ariana originally had over 145 million has now dropped to 142 million.

Whereas Kylie, who had almost 127 million followers has decreased to 124 million.

Ariana and Kylie are not the only ones who lost followers – James Charles also noticed a different.  He tweeted, “Why did I just lose over half a million followers Instagram?”

Earlier this morning, Instagram tweeted about their awareness however, didn’t specify what the actual issue was, “We’re aware of an issue that is causing change in account follower numbers for some people right now.  We’re working to resolve this as quickly as possible.”

So what actually happened? According to the CEO Steve Barlett, part of the Social Chain Group, he posted, “INSTAGRAM FOLLOWER CULL –  Last night Instagram removed inactive / bot accounts from all accounts, globally. I’ve woken up to an inbox full of messages from concerned people / influences and brands who have in some cases, lost millions of followers while they were asleep.”

Instagram then updating their Twitter, “We’re expecting to have this resolved by 9AM tomorrow.  We understand this is frustrating, and our team is hard at work to get things back to normal.”

According to Tech Crunch, “Instagram  is fighting back against automated apps people use to leave spammy comments or follow then unfollow others in hopes of growing their audience. Today Instagram is removing from people’s accounts who use these apps inauthentic follows, Likes and comments that violate its policies; sending them a warning to change their password to cut ties with these apps, and saying people who continue using these apps “may see their Instagram experience impacted.” Instagram tells me it “may limit access to certain features, for example” for those users.”
