McDonald’s has beef with the Edmonton burger joint Woodshed Burgers. Or in this case, they have fish.

The company sent a cease and desist letter to the restaurant for copyright infringement on the name of their fish burger, called the Effing Fillet o Fish. The name is meant to be a play on McDonald’s famous fish sandwich, along with the name of their seafood supplier, the Effing Seafoods company.

The letter said:

“McDonald’s is concerned that your restaurant’s use of Effing Filet O’ Fish, particularly in association with a sandwich or burger menu item, is likely to cause confusion amongst consumers and is also likely to diminish and dilute and strength of McDonald’s trademark,”

“In order to protect this reputation and goodwill, the law requires it to take steps to prevent use by third-parties of any trademarks that could result in consumer confusion or dilution of McDonald’s trademarks.”

Chef and owner of Woodshed Burgers, Paul Shufelt, said at first he was nervous about the letter, but decided to have some fun with it, changing the name of the burger to the McEffing Fish Fillet.

“Meet our NEW McEffing Fish Fillet burger *tm!!! Which is basically exactly the same as it was before! Beer battered Icelandic cod from Effing Seafoods, house made tangy coleslaw, pickled red onions and house made tartar sauce… if you come in and try one make sure you don’t confuse our McEffing fish burger with the McDonalds Fillet o Fish!”
