Doja (born as Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini) was born on October 21, 1995 in Tarzana, California.  Her father is Dumisani Dlamini, a South African actor who worked alongside Whoopi Goldberg in the film ‘Sarafina!’ and The Lion King on Broadway, and her mother, Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer, is an artist.  Growing up, Doja moved back and forth between the east and west coast, claiming Bronx, New York and Oak Park, L.A., to be her home.

So, how was the name ‘Doja Cat’ born? As Doja reveals, “I was heavily addicted to weed and weed culture, so when I began rapping I thought of the word ‘doja’ and how it sounds like a girl’s name.”  Between 2013 and 2014, Doja released her debut EP titled ‘Purrr!’ along with a handful of singles, including ‘So High,’ which was featured on the soundtrack for the TV series, Empire (third episode, first season).

Fast-forward to February 1, 2018, Doja released ‘Roll with Us,’ which would later be acknowledged as her debut single. On March 9, Doja released a second single, ‘Go to Town’ along with a music video, released the same day as the record. In August of 2019, the video reached over 17 million views on YouTube and on March 30, Doja’s debut studio album, Amala, was released.

Less than six months later, Doja released what became a viral music video for her single, ‘Mooo!’ The video accumulated well over 65 million views on YouTube.

Following ‘Moo!,’ Doja released a couple more singles off Amala – ‘Tia Tamera’ with Rico Nasty and ‘Juicy’ with Tyga.  Doja then dropped her second studio album on November 7, 2019, Hot Pink.  The album features the massive ‘Say So,’ a record that began a viral dance challenge on TikTok and ‘Boss B***h,’ which you can also find on the Birds of Prey soundtrack.

In the end, Doja hopes to accomplish one thing – “It’s the perfect time for people to be colourful and animated. We need people who are open to doing something with theme, something with a cartoonish twist. [Rap] is very one dimensional right now,” she told Elle.
