Here’s everything you should know this Thursday morning! It’s Pepper & Dylan’s Things You Need to Know on February 25, 2021.

COVID-19

Alberta reported 430 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday and 13 more deaths related to the illness. Across the province there are currently 4,545 active cases. The Edmonton Zone currently has 925 active cases while Calgary leads the province with 1,564 cases. 307 patients are being treated in hospital and 56 of them in ICU beds.

With the additional 13 deaths, a total of 1,866 people have now died from COVID-19 in Alberta since the beginning of the pandemic last March.

Seniors

Over 20,000 seniors were able to register for the COVID-19 vaccine yesterday. Shortly after the registration portal opened at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, it began to slow down and started crashing. Long wait times and queues to register began to from and reached into the thousands of people.

One young computer programmer trying to book an appointment for his grandparents found a work around that would get him through the line of people and able to register. After he shared his hack on twitter, hundreds of people were able to use it to register immediately.

By 7 p.m. last evening, the hack was fixed and the site went back to long wait times and queues.

911 received nearly 100 calls in the first few hours of the online booking portal being open. Many seniors mistakenly called 911 instead of 811.

Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers are in Vancouver at 8 p.m. this evening to take on the Canucks. The Oilers were able to defeat the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, returning from a 3 – 0 deficit. They scored 4 unanswered goals, all in the third period, and won the game 4 – 3.

Edmonton has won 10 out of their last 12 games with 4 of those wins in a row. Let’s hope they can keep it up and take a repeat win against Vancouver.
