We’re just weeks away from Halloween, so let the pumpkin carving begin! If you’re a carving rookie or just need a tip or two to remember, here are 5 tips to keep your pumpkin carving looking fresh and last longer.

Tip #1 Pumpkin Selection

Choosing the right pumpkin is crucial – find one with a solid stem and no soft spots. It’s always better to get pumpkins from a local farm instead of a grocery store because local pumpkins will be fresher and less damaged. When handling your pumpkin, don’t pick it up from the stem – it can break! Instead, support the beautiful pumpkin by its bottom.

Tip #2 Surface Carving

Instead of cutting all the way through the pumpkin, try a different approach like surface carving. This technique will help with making it last longer. Try drawing your design on the pumpkin, then follow the line and carve under the line.

Tip #3 Cleaning

If you do choose to hollow out the pumpkin, make sure you thoroughly clean the pumpkin inside and out. Scrap out all seeds and pumpkin flesh to help slow down the process of bacterial growth.

Tip #4 Petroleum Jelly

You can use Vaseline or any brand of petroleum jelly to coat the carved parts of your pumpkin. DO NOT use real candles if you’re using this tip – as Vaseline is flammable! It’s always best to use LED candles as a light in your pumpkin, because a real flame might end up cooking your jack-o-lantern.

Tip #5 Ice Bath

If your pumpkin is starting to look a little sad early on, try putting it in a nice cool ice bath. Overall, you should be keeping your pumpkin in a cool climate. Don’t overdo it – only give your pumpkin one ice bath.
