Many artists are using their platform to stand in solidarity with the fight against injustice towards black people. #BlackoutTuesday is a call for the music industry to acknowledge the brutal murder of George Floyd, and raise awareness of black discrimination.

Two music industry executives, Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang, started the initiative, originally titled #TheShowMustBePaused, and “is meant to intentionally disrupt the work week,” according to initiative’s website. “Monday suggests a long weekend, and we can’t wait until Friday for change. It is a day to take a beat for an honest, reflective and productive conversation about what actions we need to collectively take to support the Black community,”

George Floyd’s death was the catalyst behind many protests happening all over the world, and #BlackoutTuesday is an example of standing in union with Floyd.

Rihanna posted a black picture on her Instagram account, with the caption: “we ain’t buying sh-t!!! and we ain’t selling sh-t neither!! gang gang! #BLACKOUTTUESDAY AF!!! @fenty @fentybeauty @savagexfenty”

Katy Perry thoroughly explained her stance on the subject: “I try to live my life to answer the question, “How can I be of service?” I have spent the last few days watching, listening and reflecting about how to utilize my privilege and platform. I hope that #BlackoutTuesday gives us all (especially in the music industry) an opportunity to take what we’re learning and put it into action on Wednesday, and every day going forward.
