Kelly Clarkson and Demi Lovato kept it real with their fans during Thursday’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Kelly told Demi, “I love how open you are about mental health because I have similar issues, and I’ve suffered from depression.  I think a lot of people, especially in the creative world or just from childhood you’ve been trained to just keep going and you can handle it. Especially as a woman it’s like, ‘Don’t let them see you sweat.’ I just love that you’re open about that because not everybody’s as vulnerable being like that. And I think it’s helpful for your fans.”

Demi then shared, “You were like the first idol that I ever had. I wouldn’t be the artist or even the person that I am with being so outspoken and vulnerable and fearless if I hadn’t had you to look up to, so I thank you for that.  I looked at you as my idol growing up. You are fearless and courageous and real as f**k, you know? I love that about you. When I was younger I always thought to myself, ‘If I make it, I want to be like her because she’s real and she’s genuine.'”

Afterwards, Kelly thanks Demi for the compliment and adds, “I’m not all the time! It takes work.  I think that’s the thing, everybody looks at us as like, even when you overcome something they’re like, ‘OK she’s already overcome that.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, no. That’s a daily effort in, like, trying to be positive. That’s a daily effort. That’s not like a given, like you’re just over it and you went to some magical therapy session and it’s over. I think that that’s a daily thing that you work at and a daily thing that I work at. I don’t know; thank you for the compliments but I just think it’s a really cool thing and it’s not easy to always have a spotlight on you and arrows being aimed at you. Especially when you are vulnerable and you give people more ammo for all the trolls out there.”

Both Kelly and Demi have their own share of issues.  While Demi suffered an overdose back in 2018, Kelly suffers from abandonment issues, something she’s had to deal with since she was a child.  She told Glamour Unfiltered, “I don’t think you get rid of that. I have people in my life that suffer from addiction to certain things and that doesn’t go away. It’s always there. It’s just navigating your life around that existence in your life. You don’t ever one day wake up and are like, ‘OK, I’m totally cool with the fact that I have major abandonment issues because horrible things happened.’ That’s why I write songs about it and you connect with all these people that you don’t know.”

Earlier this week, Demi took to Instagram to write a special, heartfelt birthday message to her boyfriend, Max Ehrich. “I have so much fun with you and there’s so many things I want to say right now but I want to be present and spend this bday with you so I’ll be quick: Being with you makes life SO MUCH FUN.  We literally act like hooligans on the daily and don’t give a F— if we’re embarrassing ourselves if others are around!! I spend my days with you, bare faced and in a bathing suit.. I feel unconditionally loved and accepted by you in a way that I’ve never felt before.. I can’t explain it or you.. you’re indescribable, you beautiful, man.  Inside and out you are jaw-droppingly gorgeous.  You’re also such a positive lil beam of light in my life and I can’t wait to make more birthday memories together.”
