The Edmonton Police Service is warning about a new tax scam that’s making the rounds in Edmonton. The EPS has been getting around 50 calls a day about a fake Canada Revenue Agency, and the craziest part is that the fake calls are asking people to pay off taxes by buying iTunes cards…

And unfortunately, multiple people have fallen victim to it. EPS said an elderly lady dished out $22,000 in two installments of iTunes cards.

Obviously you should be wary if someone asks you for anything over the phone, especially if it’s gift cards to pay for taxes.

The reason people are still scammed by this though is because phones with caller ID really do show a CRA # when the scammers call. A spokesperson for the Canadian Revenue Agency has said that due to technology today, hackers have the ability to display a specific phone # or ID.

 

So there’s a few things you can do moving forward with this information;

  1. Be aware and look out for scammers
  2. Don’t answer – if it’s important they will leave a voicemail – and if they leave a voicemail check the number online to be sure 
  3. TAKE ALL YOUR PHONES AND DESTROY THEM! NOW THEY CAN”T GET YOU! BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! 

Also if the calls are bad and frequent you should probably let the Police know, because then they can get to the bottom of it!
