There is nothing better than a gorgeous, full, fresh-smelling, REAL Christmas tree, right? You may have started to see them popping up for sale at tree lots, nurseries, farms and even stores. But, is it too early to get your live tree? How do you make it last until Christmas? We have some expert tips for you…..we’ll even address the “putting a penny in the water” theory for you!

  1. Get it in water ASAP! It seems obvious. But a lot of people like to let their tree “settle” on the porch for a day or two before putting it up. Ultimately, however, it’s a live plant. The sooner you get it in the water, the better! Water, water, water. Keep that trough in your tree stand full and check it regularly!
  2. Be aware of heat! The temperature in your house can easily dry out a tree if its too warm. It will also cause the water to evaporate more quickly. You may want to avoid placing your tree above or near a heat vent. Also be aware of natural light sources like windows. Even natural light can contribute to drought. Smaller lights may also help. And, don’t forget to turn the lights off when not in the room so prevent additional heat exposure.
  3. Trim the trunk. When trees are first cut, sap rushes to close the “wound” and will seal the bottom. As a result, the tree isn’t as able to absorb water. Using a saw, just trim half an inch off the trunk just before putting it in your tree stand.

There is some debate among experts as to whether adding things like maple syrup, sugar, pennies, even aspirin might help with the longevity of your tree. While none of those things will hurt your tree, studies show none of those “myths” will really help. Ultimately, clean water is the best way to go.
