Here’s everything you should know this Wednesday morning! It’s Pepper & Dylan’s Things You Need to Know on February 24, 2021.

COVID-19

Alberta reported 267 new cases of COVID-19 and 11 additional deaths related to the disease yesterday. 12 new cases of the B.1.1.7 variant were also identified in Alberta bringing the total variant cases up to 301 to date. There are now 4,516 active cases across the province with 930 in the Edmonton Zone and 1,612 in the Calgary Zone.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced that Alberta seniors over 75 years old can book COVID-19 vaccine appointments starting at 8 a.m. this morning. Anyone born in 1946 and earlier is eligible to use the Alberta Health Services booking tool at ahs.ca/covidvaccine. Hinshaw says all Alberta seniors who want to receive a vaccine should be able to get their first dose before the end of March. They can then book the second dose within the recommended 32 to 42-day window. The province has administered more than 180,000 doses of vaccine so far and more than 73,000 Albertans have been fully immunized with both doses.

Alberta’s top doctor says if a decision is made on March 1st to proceed to the next step, it is possible that restrictions could be eased the same day. Step 2 of the reopening phase would see restrictions lifted around retail stores, banquet halls, community halls, conference centres, hotels and indoor fitness.

Tiger Woods

Yesterday morning, Tiger Woods was involved in a single-car rollover accident in Los Angeles. He was the only passenger in the car and was extracted using the “jaws of life” and rushed to hospital.

Tiger’s injuries are non-life threatening. He suffered a shattered ankle and two leg fractures including a compound fracture. Doctors performed emergency surgery to attempt stabilize his leg with a combination of rods, screws and pins.

Pink Shirt Day

Bullying continues to be a problem in our society. Pink Shirt Day is a day dedicated to beating the bullies and breaking the cycle that creates and perpetuates this damaging behavior in schools.

Wear a pink shirt on Anti-Bullying Day to symbolize a stand against bullying. This idea originated in Canada, but it’s now celebrated on various dates around the world.

6-Legged Dog

A few days ago, a dog was born in Oklahoma City. This dog was rejected by her mother because she was born with 6 legs…

Vets say “Skipper” is a miracle, as it is very rare for a dog to survive this rare congenital conjoining disorder where she also has duplicate organs from the waist down, including reproductive systems. Neel Veterinary Hospital is the home of the miracle puppy and staff at Neel were pleasantly surprised to find out that her internal organs are very healthy and all of her 6 legs react to stimulus just like normal legs would.

“Skipper” will probably need physical therapy to ensure she is pain free and happy for the rest of her life.
