The Edmonton Public School Board has released the names of the 9 new schools that will be coming to the city in September of 2017!

The names were picked based on people who were/are influential Albertans and Edmontonians.

The names are;

 

Donald R. Getty School ( K-9)

Getty was premier of Alberta from 1985 to 1992, and was also a former quarterback with the Edmonton Eskimos.

 

Jan Reimer School (K-9)

Reimer was Edmonton’s first female mayor and is the executive director of the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters.

 

Shauna May Seneca School (K-9)

Seneca was a former social worker and co-founder of the Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society.

 

Constable Daniel Woodall School (Windermere K-9)

Woodall served for the Edmonton Police Service who worked in the hate crimes unit. He was killed in the line of duty in 2015.

 

Hilwie Hamdon School (K-9)

One of Edmonton’s first Lebanese Muslim immigrants. He is credited with helping to support the building of the first mosque in Canada.

 

Svend Hansen School ( K-9)

Hansen was an Edmonton public school teacher, principal, consultant and trustee. He founded the Public School Administrators Association.

 

Kim Hung School (K-9)

Hung helped establish the Mandarin bilingual program at Edmonton Public Schools.

 

David Thomas King School (K-9)

King is a former education minister who also served as executive director of the Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta for 10 years.

 

 Dr. Lila Fahlman (K-9)

Fahlman, who passed away in 2006,  was an educator, philanthropist and social justice advocate. She was a recipient of the Order of Canada and the founder of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women.
