Facebook announced on Friday that they are adding a new component to messenger – secret messages.

They will be private conversations that are end-to-end encrypted. This means only you and your friend you’re messaging can see the messages.

So unlike normal messages, the new secret ones won’t be stored on Facebook’s servers, but on your device and your recipient’s device.

You will also be able to ‘self destruct’ the messages, kind of like the original Snapchat but Facebook style. You’ll be given the option of setting a timer that erases all the messages after (for example) 24 hours.

Now, this whole ‘secret’ stuff might make you think Facebook is making it easier for some not-so-good behavior to take place secretly online…BUT we are going to take a more innocent outlook, and say that Facebook understands that some friends and family can be a bit nosy sometimes, so this way you can have even more privacy and peace of mind.

Or maybe you need to plan a surprise party! This way you’ll be 100% sure that it IS a surprise!

OR! Maybe you have a decision that the Pepper & Dylan Show can help you make, but it involves someone else who might see your FB messages, so this way you can talk to us ALL THE TIME with total privacy and reveal juicy details about your life!!!! And then we’ll probably convince you to come on air and talk about it…(Which totally DOESN’T defeat the whole privacy thing…)

So when will you see the new FB Secret messages?? As per usual, Facebook will do a test run with a limited number of users, but it should be available to everyone by the end of the summer.

One last thing to note is that you’ll have to activate the secret messages by turning them on manually.
