“It’s pretty surreal. As awful as it was, I’m still going to be able to walk and do all the things I could do before.”

This is CRAZY. What was supposed to be a two hour drive to visit family in Northern Alberta, turned into a situation that could have been fatal. Michael Walker, 26, said he was traveling between Eureka River and Debolt on Christmas for the usual family gatherings, when he went off the road into a ditch.

“I just remember coming to while screaming and being stuck upside down in my vehicle.”

When Walker woke to realize he was stuck in the overturned car, he quickly shut the car off and starting flashing the headlights and honking the horn, in hopes that a passerby would hear. He thought the car would be visible from the road, but it wasn’t.

The cars battery then died, and Walker realized he would be staying the night in -20 weather conditions. He credits the clothes he got for Christmas as his saviour. They were in the car with him and he layered them on to help him survive the temperatures. 14 hours after being in the frigid conditions, he was saved around 7AM when the husband of a high school friend found him.

Walker had broken a vertebrae, ankle and foot. He is recovering in the University of Alberta hospital in Edmonton from surgery for injuries.
