‘CAN YOU HEAR ME?’ PHONE CALL SCAM WARNING:

There’s a new scam Police are warning of, in which an unfamiliar number calls and asks, “Can you hear me?”

The goal of the scammer is to get the person to say “Yes,” which they record and then use to authorize credit card or bill charges.

Once recorded the scammer may use the recording immediately or hold onto it and use in the future.

Scammers are also using other questions to get people to say the word “Yes,” including, “Are you the homeowner?” and “Do you pay the bills?”

Obvious ways to avoid the scam are not answering unknown numbers, not giving out personal information, not confirming your number over the phone, and not answering questions over the phone. If you do find yourself in the position of answering questions, answer in statements like, “I am the homeowner”, instead of “yes.”

Police suggest if you do get a suspicious call, hang up immediately and report the incident.

Already gotten a call like this? Police say you must monitor your credit activity immediately.

Stay safe from scammers!
