golden globes

Mike and Helena have called in a very talent Edmonton fashion designer to judge the Golden Globes runway !

Malorie Urbanovitch : Globe and Mails fashion designer to watch in 2016 #yegtalent

Here’s what Malorie Urbanovitch had to say!

I’ve gotta say that in general I was a little disappointed with the lack of statements being made with the fashion at the globes this year. Especially on the part of the younger breakout stars. Awards shows are the perfect opportunity to take risks and get noticed. I know it’s a risk to make a statement but in my opinion, it’s so much worse to be boring. And it was a bit of a snooze fest.

That said, there were a few stars that hit the mark. I can’t say that any of them blew my socks off, but they were less than boring.

FASHION STATEMENT:

1. Cate Blanchett in Givenchy by Richardo Tisci

This was the best dress of the night for me. The mixing lace and perfectly placed fringe made this piece a standout. The colour was really lovely, and the capelet that was attached felt natural and not forced. We definitely have a Downton Abby, 1920s influence with this silhouette, which is usually pretty drool worthy. Old-school glamour for the win.

2. Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton

73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

This Swedish beauty went for understated elegance in her white Louis Vuitton column gown. The delicate pleating alone made this gown move like a dream. The cross-strap detail in the back and the square ruffle front, as well as her sun-kissed skin hinted at laid-back summers in Sweden. Overall Alicia looked charming and effortless. Win.

3. Jane Fonda in Yves St Laurent Couture

This is a controversial one. But like I said, unless I’m excited, I’m bored. Jane Fonda made a STATEMENT with her off-white mega ruffle number by Yves St Laurent Couture. The colour was flattering, her body looked amazing, it was age appropriate and best of all, she took a risk. With the death of icon David Bowie, I think it’s safe to say we will be seeing a strong resurgance of 1980s glam, and this hit the mark. While some of you were comparing this gown to your grandmother’s lampshade, I was freaking out. WIN!

Now on to the….FACEPLANTS.

1. Katy Perry

Katy Perry
What was she thinking? While I enjoyed her hair and make-up, her dress was ill-fitting, boring, and just plain bad taste. It was the grad silhouette of the 90s in the WORST WAY. The colour was cute but that’s about as generous as I’ll be with that one.

2. Maggie Gyllenhaal in Marc Jacobs

Where to begin. There is actually a photo of her at the after party blending into the vintage inspired wallpaper in the background. The colour was so offputting I’m not sure why yellow and black were used together in this way. The pattern looked like a couch my grandmother got rid of years ago, and the floral brooch at her shoulder is just so confusing. I’m just so confused.

3. Kate Hudson in Michael Kors

This one takes the cake. Another case of a 90’s resurgence gone horribly wrong. She looks like she was dressing up as J-Lo for Halloween. I do not understand the choker. It is just so dated. The colour is wrong. Her frosty matching lips are wrong. Wrong to the max. All of it.
