Kesha stopped by Good Morning America where she spoke with Robin Roberts about her upcoming album, Rainbow (available Aug. 11), her new single and the album’s impact on her life.

Kesha says, “I’ve written every song on this album and they’re all so personal.  This record, quite literally, saved my life. I hope you guys like it and I hope you can hear it, and I hope it helps people.”

Before talking about her new album as a whole, Kesha spoke about her very emotional lead single Praying, while trying to not to cry in front of the audience:  “It talks about me personally going through something very hard, lots of very hard things, making it through, not giving up, and finding empathy on the other side — which is incredibly hard sometimes.”

Kesha explains that the album’s title relates to “the hopeful symbolism she sees in rainbows” and admitted that her house is filled with rainbows and she now has 10 tattoos related to rainbows.  “I’ve always found the hope in the bright colours.  I wanted to bring that more into my everyday life.”

Kesha also explained that her new album presents a family affair.  Her mom helped her on some of the tracks and her brother served as a videographer at GMA.  And the one family member that Kesha is most excited about? Dolly Parton!  Dolly is featured on the album.  “I consider her family now.  That was like, the craziest thing in the world to me that she actually said yes to collaborating with me, I’m still not over it, so I’m just going to tell everybody about it forever.”

And when asked how music helped during her difficult time with Dr. Luke, Kesha says, “I think this record has quite literally saved my life.  I hope you guys like it and I hope you can hear it and I hope it helps people. I’ve always found the hope in the bright colours and I wanted to bring that more into my everyday life.”

“It’s so personal.  I’ve written very song on this album, and they’re all so personal and this song [“Praying”] I think is just really important because it talks about me personally going through something very hard — lots of very hard things — making it through, not giving up and finding empathy on the other side, which is incredibly hard sometimes. It’s difficult.” – Kesha on Rainbow.
